Whispers died down as I slowly walked past the front doors. All eyes gazed in my direction; blue peepers, brown peepers, green peepers, digging into my skin and ravaging my soul. My hands were nervously clutched together, swinging slightly from side to side as I walked slowly down the long alley that separated me from my goal. Every step was a challenge, perfectly timed to the music that danced in my head, exploding inside my mind. As I slowly advanced, alone in the middle of the crowd on a carpet of doom, I could feel their thoughts burning me, exposing me to the naked truth. I shyly gulped down my fear, struggling not to quicken my pace. I was halfway there; but I still had halfway left to go. I closed my eyes tightly shut for a fraction of a second, only to gasp quietly at what I saw when I opened them. Black. All of them were black. Shadows of lies, monsters of pain. Their bright wide eyes dug even deeper into my soul. I desperately clutched on to my stomach with both hands, feeling it twist and turn. There were no butterflies in there. It was a fire, an undying, murderous fire. The flames engulfed my heart as I coughed in pain, complete and utter pain. The music was growing dark in my head, dark and heavy, yet light as a feather. It was terrifying, everything was terrifying. The bleached white walls were covered with blood, and no matter how many times I blinked, the ceiling was still dripping from the massacre going on inside my mind. My pace faltered; I tripped on my dress. I was falling into darkness. The floor was gone, and all there was was darkness. I closed my eyes tightly shut once more. When my eyes opened again, everything was as it had been. The hopeful faces filled with hatred that chilled me to the bone, the majestic palace that was offering itself to me in all its beauty... and I wasn't falling. Suddenly, all that had happened in that illusion of truth was but a memory, and I walked, head held high though I fought agonizing doubt in my mind. And the music played on, encouraging me. I was there. I was almost there. I just had to climb up those three steps, and sit down on that throne. One step, two steps, three steps... I stopped dead in my tracks. Silence filled my ears, a silence so deafening I had trouble to breathe. I turned around, staring at all those faces, mashed together as one, staring at me. I gulped my fear down once more, and sat down on the throne, still holding my head high though it strained my neck. I was handed the sceptre, and grabbed it with a shaking hand, the other one balled up in a fist on the arm rest. I grasped the sceptre tightly, and raised it slowly. They watched in awe as I slammed it back down, and the song finished. It was over. Everything was over.
